Student travel insurance: what to check before you study abroad

Your student policy is judged three times: by the visa office, by your university, and one day perhaps by a hospital billing desk. Most students buy for the first and meet the other two later. Here's how to check all three before you fly.

In this article

Two weeks before your flight to the US, you buy a student travel policy. It is far cheaper than your university's own health plan, and the brochure lists everything: medical cover, study interruption, sponsor protection, even a bail bond. In September, your student account shows a charge for the university plan anyway. Your policy did not clear the waiver checklist, the deadline has passed, and you are paying twice to be covered once.

Nothing was wrong with the policy. It was bought for the wrong judge. A student policy is judged three times: by the visa office, by your university, and, on a bad day, by a hospital billing desk. Here is how to pass all three before you fly.

What student travel insurance is

Student travel insurance is overseas travel insurance built for a long stay abroad for study. It works like ordinary travel insurance, stretched over a longer stay, with extras aimed at students and the families paying for them.

Two rules shape how you buy it. It generally has to be bought before you leave India, and while many plans can be extended from abroad, that usually has to happen before the policy expires. Let it lapse overseas and you may not be able to buy the same cover again.

Who sets the rules where you are going

Before comparing premiums, check whether your visa or university has already decided the cover for you. Often, one has.

Where you study Who sets the rule What it means for an Indian policy
USA Usually your university. Many enrol you in their own plan unless a waiver is approved by a deadline Replaces the university plan only if it clears the waiver checklist
UK The visa. Most student visa applicants pay the Immigration Health Surcharge for NHS access A top-up for what the NHS does not pay for, such as getting you home
Australia The visa. You must keep Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) from a registered Australian insurer Cannot replace OSHC. An extra at best
Canada Your province and your school Ask your school what it requires
Schengen countries Short courses: the short-stay visa's 30,000-euro medical minimum. Longer courses: each country's own rules Match that country's rules

The US row needs the most care. Some universities state that travel insurance does not qualify for a waiver, and some accept only US-based plans, which rules out an Indian policy. Read the checklist first. Buy second.

What a student plan covers, and the catch in each

Then read the policy itself. Each cover pays only on its own trigger.

Cover What it pays for The catch to check
Medical expenses Treatment for illness or injury abroad Sum insured, per-claim deductible, sub-limits
Evacuation and repatriation Moving you for treatment, or home Whether the insurer must arrange it, and the limit
Study interruption Fees already paid if illness or injury stops your course Commonly needs a long hospital stay, on some plans more than a month
Sponsor protection Your remaining fees if your named sponsor dies On many plans, only an accidental death counts
Compassionate visit A family member's airfare to your bedside Usually only after a set stay in hospital, often over a week
Bail bond, passport, baggage Smaller emergencies Lower limits, and claims need reports and receipts

Sponsor protection is the easiest to misread. On many plans, a parent's death from a heart attack or a long illness does not count. Read the trigger, not the title.

Two more gaps to check: pre-existing conditions, usually excluded, sometimes with a carve-out for life-threatening emergencies (see pre-existing conditions in travel insurance), and mental health care, which some plans exclude unless the policy specifically names it.

How to choose a student policy before you fly

  1. Get your university's insurance rules first: the waiver checklist, the deadline, and whether outside plans are accepted at all. Some universities make you re-apply every term.
  2. Check what your visa already requires. OSHC or the UK health surcharge changes what an Indian policy is for.
  3. Read the medical cover as three numbers: sum insured, per-claim deductible and sub-limits.
  4. Read the trigger on every student extra, especially sponsor protection and study interruption.
  5. Declare any pre-existing condition, and check how mental health care is treated.
  6. Ask what happens to your cover if you fly home or visit another country during a break.
  7. Diary the expiry date. Extend before it, not after.

FAQ

Is student travel insurance mandatory for studying abroad? It depends on the country and the university. Australia requires OSHC for student visa holders, the UK charges most student visa applicants a health surcharge, and US rules are usually set by each university.

Will a US university accept my Indian student travel policy? Only if it meets that university's waiver criteria. Some reject travel insurance outright, and some accept only US-based plans.

Can I extend student travel insurance while I am abroad? Many plans allow it, up to a set maximum, but usually only before the current policy expires.

What is sponsor protection in student travel insurance? It pays your remaining fees, up to a limit, if your named sponsor dies during the policy period. On many plans only an accidental death counts.

Does student travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions? Usually not by default. Some plans cover life-threatening emergencies arising from them. Declare every condition when you buy.
